Sad Day

Update: Be sure to read the comments for a list of 10 reasons Illinois is awesome. Jenn, a native Illinoisan, is trying to set this Texas girl straight! Who knows? Maybe by the time Darby's done with school in 5 years I will have been converted. :) Thanks, Jenn! You're a good sport!

I finally bit the bullet and changed my license plates. (Well, Darby actually changed them.) I got my Illinois plates about a month ago, but for some reason the thought of giving up my Texas plates made me sad. I'm not sure why. I'm not one of those people that's super-enthusiastic about Texas. But I liked being different. Plus, there are a lot of blue Escapes around, so mine was always easy to pick out in a parking lot. And, they were kind of like my last tie to Texas. I've already changed my license, insurance, etc. I don't really like being an Illinois resident. I like living here in Champaign, but Illinois on the whole is kind of a "blah" state, don't you think? Maybe this is the obnoxious Texan in me coming out, but I think it's much cooler to be from Texas than to be from Illinois. No offense to any native Illinoisans(?) that might be reading. :)

But, eventually, the plates had to be changed to avoid getting a ticket. The nice thing is that there's no yearly inspection required in Illinois. Woo-hoo!

I took this picture in the garage, so that's why there's a weird angle. It is nice and shiny, but it's no Texas plate.

R.I.P.
Anyone got any creative ideas for displaying two very dirty license plates?

Okay now, I understand your tie to Texas, but in Illinois defense, you haven't been here long enough (or seen enough of it) to truly judge if it's a "blah" state! ;-)

Head down to Southern Illinois in the Fall - NOTHING beats the colors. Or, Chicago at Christmas time - the lights are amazing!!! Give it time, you'll fall in love with the state (and all four of our fabulous seasons!!!) :-)

Oh come on, we have big cities! We have... um... well... Kaskaskia has a population of 9!!!

You can tell your fellow Texans that some of my favorite Illinois trivia includes:

1. State Snack - Popcorn (come on, how great is that!?!)

2. Famous peeps - Walt Disney, Ernest Hemingway, Burl Ives, Ronald Reagan

3. The Sears Tower, Chicago is the tallest building on the North American continent.

4. Metropolis the home of Superman really exists in Southern Illinois.

5. Illinois was the first state to ratify the 13th Amendment to the Constitution abolishing slavery. 1865.

6. Des Plaines is home to the first McDonald's. (although my "back side" could do without this great invention!)

7. Illinois boasts the highest number of personalized license plates, more than any other state.

8. In Mount Pulaski, it is illegal for boys (and only boys) to hurl snowballs at trees. Girls are allowed to do that however.

9. The Chicago River is dyed green on Saint Patrick's Day.

10. The world's largest cookie and cracker factory, where Nabisco made 16 billion Oreo cookies in 1995, is located in Chicago.

:-) Yes, mostly useless, but a start!

Aww! It was hard for us to change our plates too!! We waited so long, especially Dylan. He got a letter in the mail from the state of GA threatening him with fines if he didn't change his plates :/. I feel your pain, and yes, TX is a cool state to be from!!
